PCPro did a review of the ASUS-built Google Nexus. They rated it highly. Android 4.1 runs very smoothly in their opinion. They also liked the way it 'just connected' to their office WiFi and were impressed with the speed of iPlayer content streamed in HD.

Incidentally, earlier this year they undertook a challenge to see if you could replace your office laptop with a tablet. They used tablets running Android, iOS and QNX (RIM 'Playbook'). Unlike the other two tablets, the Android-powered one was able to not only connect to the MS Exchange mail server without much hassle, but was able to print to any network connected printer.

The only way they could get the articles they had written for the magazine off the iPad was to email them to a colleague with a PC and then get them to save them to the company server ready for submission.
Their conclusion was that the iPad was not the best choice when it came to business use.
    Never Knowingly Understood.

I would wait. In a few weeks time you will see whether an iPad mini comes out with the specs and prices to compare the 2 together. Anything before is just speculation.

Personally though, if one did come out and was competitively priced against the Nexus 7 then I would choose the iPad every time. Again, just my opinion.
  • I have a nexus 7, for just over a week. So far, mostly happy. It is fast, has lots of apps, the latest very smooth android operating system. It is great for browsing, email, reading (with kindle app). I'm not a gamer, and have never had an apple, but each OS is trying to lock you in to their system by means of the non-transferable apps. If they are vital (and work on the new ipad mini) then where is your choice?
You mentioned uploading photographs, but the N7 has no main camera, just a tiny one for skype. It has no camera app, though you can find one on the Play Store and take (poor) pictures with the front facing camera.
Flash is dying. It regularly needs security fixes.
BBC iPlayer uses Adobe Air; it is very sad that I cannot have this.
Skyfire browser touts itself as the browser for flash, as it runs the flash on its own site and streams the results to you. Apparently being updated for the N7 and Jelly Bean.
So far as I know, Apple refuses to support flash.

No one mentioned the smaller version of the Galaxy Tab / Note ?

It has expandable memory, whereas the Nexus does not.
If you want you own movies and music on your tablet with the least amount of fuss then either the Nexus or the Tab / Note is the way forward!!

I love my iPhone, but DETEST iTunes.

I have the iPlayer running on my Nexus 7, a quick google will show you the way, or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1806897

The problem is the iPad Mini (or whatever it is/maybe called) has not been released and therefore anyone's opinions of it will be based on rumours. And we know from 2011 when everyone was expecting the iPhone 5 how wrong rumours can be.

So you either wait until later this year for the rumoured Apple device.
Or you can go out today and buy the Nexus 7. Given you detail in your last paragraph what you want from the device for, the Nexus 7 will do all that.

I have to agree. I like Asus products (own two Eee netbooks and a Transformer) but the lack of expandable storge would make me shy away from the two devices discussed here.

But, i thought the Nexus 7 has expandable microSD card slot?

I am not thinking of disregarding an iPad (because of budget constraints) and just getting a cheap really good/fast/hi-spec under-£200 Android 4.0/4.1 tablet like the N7 for casual games, watching a movie when i'm up 35,000ft in the air or surfing the internet if i'm out & about in London.

Can no one equal or top the Nexus 7 in terms of price & features?
