Do bear in mind, and as discussed on these boards previously, not all Manuka honey is the same. The correct stuff does have additional healing properties, as evidenced by many published research papers. Last year there were articles published about it and of the latest research done by Cardiff University for wound care - but this was a particular grade of honey.
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/04/110412201713.htm
For example, Manuka honey that is used for the treatment of chronically infected wounds is rigorously tested three times during production for the elusive unique manuka factor (UMF); only then can it carry the label "UMF manuka honey".
The conclusion that I came to after reading a few articles is that the Manuka honey sold on the high street, or even online, is most likely no more effective than regular honey. It may be and more likely won't have the elusive unique manuka factor.
Manuka honey (the type with the elusive unique manuka factor) is derived from nectar collected by honey bees foraging exclusively on the Manuka tree. It is thought that any other honey claiming the same properties may be collected by honey bees foraging on the Manuka tree though may also be foraged on others as well. Hence the possible lack of the elusive unique manuka factor in the honey bought in store.
Without trying to sound too severe, this is meant to be a Money Saving forum - so if you are expecting some extra health benefits don't waste your money on something that doesn't contain any additional benefits above any other type of honey.
It appears that some people are under the illusions that Manuka honey is a cure all, that isn't necessarily true.
After all, all honey is an antimicrobial agent and may have the potential for treating a variety of ailments.
If you like the taste of the Aldi honey, for example, and want it only for that, then by all means do so, but it most likely won't contain the additional properties that the research is based on. Mostly this is marketing hype.
Or perhaps consider sourcing locally produced honey for health benefits.
Local raw honey for example is sought after by allergy sufferers as the pollen impurities are thought to lessen the sensitivity to hayfever. It may also be cheaper as well though can't say for sure as I've never bought either local honey or manuka honey, so I'm not sure of the price differences.0 -
Don't know that it's the cheapest but the Aussie/New Zealand Shop in Maiden Lane, Covent Garden sells proper manuka honey.0

Holland and barret have it in the 1p sale at the moment. It means you can get two 6+ for £7. Or two 12+ for £11.60.£36/£240
£5522

Manuka honey is derived from nectar collected by honey bees foraging on the manuka tree in New Zealand. The Australian equivalent is Jellybush.
I'm not having a go at anyone here, but how do we know the stuff sold in Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, Holland & Barret, Aldi, or anywhere else, is effective?
Most of the research that has been carried out on Manuka honey is mainly on bacteria resistant to antibiotics; Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Group A Streptococci and Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). To be honest, I'm not aware of any other studies, and don't know of any that has been carried out on the stomach as [possibly] suggested by the OP.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the definition of a tough bacterial strain, able to survive in harsh environments.
It is found widely in soil and stagnant water, and can infect humans and plants.
It does not usually cause illness in healthy people, but is described as an "opportunistic" organism, causing serious infection when our normal defences are weakened.
This means that it represents a genuine threat to the most vulnerable hospital patients, most commonly intensive care patients, those with depleted immune systems such as cancer patients, people with severe burns and premature babies in neonatal units.
Q&A: What is Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection?
The group A streptococcus bacterium (Streptococcus pyogenes, or GAS) is a form of β-hemolytic Streptococcus bacteria responsible for most cases of streptococcal illness. Examples, pneumonia, tonsillitis, meningitis, etc.
Streptococcus pyogenes is a normal skin bacterium that is frequently associated with chronic (non-healing) wounds. See article from Science Daily below.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_A_streptococci
And we all know what MRSA is. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is the bacterium responsible for several difficult-to-treat infections in humans. Most people (though not all) carry Staphylococcus aureus, it is vulnerable people who are mainly at risk of acquiring MRSA, for example, people with weak immune systems, the elderly.

Correction: Manuka honey is derived from nectar collected by honey bees foraging on the manuka tree found growing in New Zealand and parts of Australia. My apologies.

I guess people (my mother included) buy manuka honey because they feel/hope that it will improve their health. The only way to know whether these things work for oneself is to have tests done.
I know that going low carb and organic has improved my health, because blood tests and eye tests have shown that. There are studies about now which show improvement with low carb diets not just for diabetes but also Crohn's disease, non alcoholic fatty liver disease and childhood epilepsy.
However we are all individuals and no matter what the studies say or other peoples' experiences are, the only way to prove whether anything works for us personally, is to test. Feeling better is subjective.0 -
Yes, maybe, and I do respect your point of view.
Though bear this in mind.
The danger with alternative remedies, or fad diets, is when a person develops a serious illness and decides to turn to alternative treatments rather than see a doctor.
And let's for a moment presume that the OP's husbands stomach condition is a serious one, though let's hope it isn't, such as cancer say, this will need to be detected as early as possible. If someone wastes several weeks or months on ineffective treatments before eventually going for a proper diagnosis, it may just have tipped the balance from a curable condition to an incurable one.
Incidentally, what blood tests and eye tests have you had?0 -

But I'm sure your Medic would not be an alky
Better a go for a check up, just in case
And I'm really sure any prescription would certainly not be an over hyped profiteering con , ( like Manuka ?) because those days are gone .....
err....:)..
PS
Dr Robert C. Atkins wrote some good books before Manuka 'arrived'.0 -
If you are a Costco member its far cheaper there than any of the shops0
