paying back £9000 tax credits should they have let it go that far?

I am paying back £9000 in tax credits at £17 a week for the next 10 years. should the government have let it get to that amount before demanding overpayment? when I asked why I was told we were below the threshhold and the threshhold got moved so we were earning too much. I had been paying back overpayments for at least 3 years as they told me I still had to put in my annual form. I had given them all the information they required so is it my fault they didn't work it out correctly. When I recieved the bills I rang up and asked why they had continued to pay me as this could have been prevented if they had stopped paying me when the amount got to £3000 and all I was being told was that we were below the threshhold I didn't get any other answers so for the next 10 years I am in debt to the government and I don't think it is fair. My husband lost his job at christmas and when I rang then I was told that I still had to pay back the overpayment,

I agree its not fair. Its not your fault they cant do their job properly....i think it depends who you get on the phone. One tells you one thing and someone else tells you something different.
I think if you have given all the correct info, and they !!!! it up you shouldnt have to pay it back, but if you give the wrong info then you should...As well if they !!!! it up they should be sacked.
I know that might sound harsh, but if you dont do your job properly anywhere else your down the road.
Have you had a break down of everything stating where you were overpaid, and do you agree with that decision??
If it is correct, then I think it will have to be paid back.0 -

So you knew you were being overpaid, you carried on renewing as they told you told you to.
Surely you should have got advice earlier or not renewed your award.
Tax Credits are crap we know that, but sometimes you got to take ownership of problems.
You do not have to apply or renew if you do not want to.
I would appeal on the fact that you kept them up to date with changes/correct information and provide evidence of all telephone calls and letter sent etc and argue that they continued to knowingly overpay you.0 -

So you end your claim, for money that you may be entitled to, well part of it anyway!
You then repay all of what you owe within 30 days.
Not sure your ideas great :rotfl:
But the second part well said

I'd say they were being rather generous allowing you to pay it back over 10 years!
Are you still claiming? I assume the £17 is just being deducted from your current claim?
£9000 is a LOT to not have noticed on your part. Sorry if that's not what you joined up to hear...0
