  • Ahhhhhhh wonderful Devil - wishing you many happy years together & look forward to hear what he's been up to!

(GR - he does look really like Zara!)

I would echo what others have said - they're all different and will come with their own little quirks. I've now rehomed 2 adults ..... best thing ever!

always had rescue dogs, first one was from the vets, a stray that had been injured, most obedient dog we have ever had, second one was a real mongrel 10 months old when we had him, very quiet at the dogs home and for the first day, then all hell broke loose, he had never been out / walked before we had him, he's definitely the wifes dog and very protective, we then tried ot rehome another (very unsuccessful and we had to take the dog back before we had real problems / vets bills) and then we rehomed anonther, we were at least her 3rd owner in 18 months, she had been mistreated but she jumped in our car, settled in with the other dog and has gradually come out of her shell, now fairly confident and spoilt. The house is way to quiet with no dogs!
  • Well brought him home today all bathed & groomed. He looks like a different dog lol.

He has such a sweet temperament, such a shame has been through the mill.

He is a whippet/bedlington cross, so I get the best of both worlds as I love both breeds.

I guess it's going to be "a get to know you" time now. :)

    Yep Photos!:D

Hope he settles in quickly. i've had a couple and really it's common sense mostly; see what the personality is, just keep things calm for a few days as much as poss and try to keep to a routine.
  • He slept without a hitch last night. I think he is just glad to be out of the kennels & in a happy home.

One issue I have is he hates cats. Obviously I can't tell whether he has been trained to dislike cats or it's just his nature. This means I won't risk taking him off the leash when out & about.

I will post photos. Will have to work out how to upload them lol.

Well done the devil made me do it, such a long name TDMMDI.

I guess the whippet in him will make him chase anything small and furry, including cats.

All of our dogs chased cats, until they met Kit, the well 'ard cat 2 doors away that stood his ground to all dogs, and buses.

As a very general rule, dogs will chase what runs away, a cat that stands it ground will be less interesting.

    What's his name?
  • I've named him Austin.

As for the cat thing, I am concerned as the cat he has chased is the old lady's cat next door. I really would be devastated if he caught it.

I have always had cats, until last year when I had to get my kitty put to sleep. So, it is quite distressing to see him chasing cats.

Hi! Well done, hope you are enjoying your new pet.

We are a month down the road from you. We got Bertie our rescue terrier on 24th July. I have to say its been a real rollercoaster. I grew up with dogs and looked after my parents dog while they went on holiday but living with your own dog 24/7 is very different.

Bertie is adorable, very affectionate and great with the kids. He has slept well on a night and is great if we leave him during the day for short periods while we go out. We are having some issues with other dogs though and he is a bit nervous with visitors. We dont think he had much contact with the outside world in his previous life.

Personally I have found it quite hard work at times. I think I expected the settling in to be easier and quicker than it has been and I know other people with rescue dogs sometimes find it takes longer than they imagine. I have heard about the "honeymoon period" with rescue dogs where everything is fantastic for the first few weeks then the dogs behaviour gets worse before it gets better. We havent really experienced this but I do think you need to be prepared for a few low points amongst the highs.

I cant imagine living without Bertie now and I am prepared to put in the hard work needed to train him. I am so glad we got a rescue dog rather than a puppy now because there are so many dogs out their needing good homes.

Hope you and Austin have a great time together. As for the cats, I should imagine most of them can look out for themselves but there will probably be someone along with some good advice.

Congratulations! :j Would you be willing to use a muzzle when he is out and about? Maybe work really hard on recall too.
