  • He could claim jobseekers allowance (contribution based) but is almost certainly going to be better off if he is entitled to pension credit as he would get help with the mortgage interest and full council tax benefit.

    A visit to CAB or welfare rights is a very good idea. And they will be able to help claim DLA. Meantime, he can check out different scenarios on this benefit checker. http://www.turn2us.entitledto.co.uk/entitlementcalculator.aspx

    I think the multiple organ failure points to a late stage alcoholism rather than 'just' a drinking problem. If she won't take treatment then stopping her intake of alcohol isn't a safe option physically - it's not just a case of enforcing withdrawal.
