That would involve talking to the supplier, which may not be able to trace the transaction, confusion, errors, mistakes, and lots of administration charges.

Far easier to just wait until the hold falls off.

Maybe worth using a credit card for purchases, or using cash?

it simply involves the supplier doing their job properly rather than blocking your current a/c , maybe stopping DD being paid, cheques stopped and causing difficulties using the card for purchases or ATM withdrawals.

and of course the same can happened to credit cards.

and out of interest, where exactly do you get cash to pay for things if you can't withdraw it from your current a/c?

I agree, but we all know they don't. The terminal is typically run by some sales staff who doesn't give a stuff if they block your account. If its somewhere like McDonalds, they probably don't even want to work there, so why should they care about the customers?

But a CC typically has a higher limit, so you can just spend as normal until the earmarking drops off. A week before payday, a lot of people have very low balances in their current accounts, so withholding money there can cause problems.

You don't use the card in the first place, so the money is never withheld, so you can use all of your money. I know someone who does this. They get paid once a month, and the night they get paid, they withdraw it all (they have zero DD and SO, everything is paid using cash).

exactly why it shoyld be made illegal; an appearance in the courts and a 10,000 fine would I'm sure magically improve their systems and attitudes

maybe, maybe not: lots of people have low limits and lots of us make large purchases on CC

I think that's a pretty ridiculous argument... I don't expect all sales staff to genuinely care about me, but I DO expect them to do their job. McDonalds pay their staff for precisely that reason, so saying "they probably don't want to work there so they shouldn't have to do anything to strenuous" is nonsense! If they don't like it, then they should quit!

I really don't think spending 5 minutes on the phone with the bank then faxing (or even emailing) them to confirm they aren't going to request the money is that much of an arduous task - especially considering it was their mistake to start with.

Some probably wish they could quit, but can't afford to.

I've lost count of the amount of times I've complained to McDs over their staff, but all I get back is a "We are looking into it; here, have a free meal on us". I go about once per month, and every time in the last 6 months they've got my order wrong because they just don't care. Today didn't want the hassle, so I opened the bag in front of them and said "So, lets see what you missed out this time". They didn't seem very happy about it (wanted to serve another customer). Good job I did though, as they forgot the hash browns!

Well I'm sure they do, but quite frankly, I don't care! I'm personally not intending to work in a supermarket forever, but in the meantime I need to - so I do as I'm told. Not liking your job is never an excuse for not doing it properly! If you're paid to do it, you should do it.
