  • As for Grayrigg, that was a Network Rail balls up due to negligence. You can't pin that on the age of BRs old slammers.

I wasn't, the point I was making was if that accident had happened with BRs old slammers and not a Pendolino train the fatalities would have been higher, a testament to the investment in new trains.
None, I was ranting at another poster for slating BR

You quoted me and then said 'you' so thought you meant me, happy it wasn't me
So do I but the private sector won't deliver the same impressive mighty railways we once had unless they're rolling around in so much loot its spilling out the windows.

Unfortunately Labour/Tories or whoever is in government over the next 13 years will be skint , so no investment there and IIRC unless the franchise fails the government can't just take the franchise back or not renew it.
Sad truth is you're probably right.

I hope not, lots of good people losing their jobs due to stupidly high bid.

    And your point is?

Oh dear! very sorry to post on your inclusive forum come/argument.
Was under the impression that the statement at the top of the page entitled me to.

    IMPORTANT!
This is an open forum - anyone can post.

But my point is you are wrong in your statement amongst other things I may add, and this was for correction/information purposes only.

Oh dear, very mature of you to quote forum etiquette to me without due cause.

Edit: Oh I see now, it was just that you knackered up your quote, you know when it's in a quote box, easy for one to read.

Also if you made your quotes clear and concise, like you did in your edited reply above there wouldn't have been any confusion, sorry to have to explain this protocol to you.

Good luck! TrickWicky, remember the old saying.

"Don't argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience."

Eh? Am I missing something? I wasn't aware I was arguing with LivingTheDream, I thought we were diplomatically discussing the pros and cons of the railways being privatised. If you hadn't noticed, at one point LTD even cheers'd me like this:

No need to try and drag me into your arguement, I've no issue with LTD (or you) so don't try and drag me into your little micro spat as I ain't taking no sides!

As a current rail employee I hear all too often about how great BR was. Not sure I agree, and not sure also that my pension would be worth much come retirement age....Not sure it will be now to be fair, but I think we stand more hope with franchises running the show than with our Government. Lets not forget, the Government seems hell-bent on ruining the country at moment, many years after they privatised the railways, do we really think they're competant to re-nationalise them?

    Be interesting!

I also hear what you're saying a lot in railway circles too.

The thing is, BR were big, they did big things, they were inspirational to many folks and despite also being hated with a passion, they kept going until the very end. Heck, they're still in existence now as BRBR:

    http://www.brbr.co.uk/enquiries
We do not handle travel enquiries, because we no longer operate trains.

They've been quietly working away for the last 19 years disposing of unwanted railway stuff. They're still serving the nation 19 years after John Major tried to destroy them - that really is quite an achievement in its own right to still be going 19 years later.

I agree BR never had much spare money to do nationwide improvements but at the same time they had very little funding from the government (AS_I_KEEP_SAYING). Government after government had been trying to crucify them since the 60's so to even make it through all of that and still move hundreds of thousands of people on a daily basis was quite frankly astonishing.

You have to give BR credit where it's due, they didn't go down without a fight - they struggled on relentlessly until the bitter end.
