    No direct income tax benefit.

Can gain from inheritance tax transfers etc if your really wealthy (however I expect that most people on this site including me aren't!)

If you're getting married for tax reasons only, it may not be a good idea to get married!
  • This government in its pursuit for alternative life styles somehow thinks that marriage is very middle class and does not support it with tax breaks on earnings pre retirement in any way even though the residents of number 10 & 11 and committed church goers - obvioulsy they do not practice what they preach.

So who started the move away from Married Person's Tax Allowance? I think you'll find it was not this government.

Why should a married couple be able to pay a lower proportion of income in tax than a singlie like me?

I could see an argument if they had kids, but then they get child benefit & (possibly) WFTC

We get child benefit of £29 per week, big wow. It would be nice if I could make use of my partners personal allowance of £5K. The extra £100 saving per month would come in very handy.

Why not sent the £29 to me each week then if you think it's a big wow? I don't want you to be unhappy.

My point was £29 is nowhere near enough to bring up children. And I've been paying tax/NI for many years and always worked etc. Would be nice to get something back.

I've been paying tax/NI for many years as well (2 years without representation as well). Would be nice to get something back to.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all in favour of the state helping people to bring up children, after all ther going to be paying my pension/being my doctor/wiping my bum in my incontanant dotage but is a sharing of tax allowances the best way to do it? A HRT payer with a non working spouse will get just under twice as much benefit out of that as a basic rate tax payerwith a nonworking spouse, is that fair?
