Where to buy Honda remote key fob?

Options
Our key fob remote (separate from the key) has stopped working, so we can't turn off the alarm on our Honda Accord SE hatchback (51 reg). If we open the doors, the alarm starts and stops again a little while after locking the doors. We can in theory still drive the car, as long as we are happy to drive around with a beeping alarm and hazard lights flashing...:rotfl:

A radio engineer has confirmed that the remote is dead. Honda of course is quoting a small fortune for a replacement fob -- £110 for the fob and £80 for reprogramming.

I believe from posts on this forum and elsewhere on the web that if I could get hold of the right model of fob it could be reprogrammed either by ourselves or a local locksmith.

Tips would be welcome on where to get the right fob. There are none on eBay at the moment -- we need model G8D-456H-A.

Buy on Ebay, reprogramming is simple and Honda dealers should be ashamed of themselves charging £80....... I used to work for the company that makes and supplies Honda's remote locking fobs and receiver units.

    Procedure..........

Perform each of the following three steps in order, then repeat all three steps two more times, for a total of three times each:

    1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position, marked II.
    2. Press the LOCK button.
    3. Turn the ignition switch to the Off position, marked I.

    Do this three times!

Next, turn the ignition switch to the ON position (II) for a fourth time.

Press the LOCK button again. The door locks should now make a cycling sound, indicating that the system has entered Programming Mode.

Press the LOCK button one more time to program this remote. If you have other remotes to program, press the LOCK button on each one in turn. The door locks should make the cycling sound after you press LOCK on each remote. You may program up to three remotes, and they must all be programmed within ten seconds of each other.

Turn the ignition off and remove the key. The remotes are now programmed and may be tested.

With practice this can be done in less than 15 seconds on a test rig using a toggle switch in place of the ignition key.

Thanks Strider590. That tallies with the procedure I had found on the web. I'm keeping an eye on eBay (standing search) but there haven't been any of our model for weeks.

So -- any ideas where one can buy these outside eBay?

No, unfortunately Honda have the only official stocks. It's not possible for 3rd parties to buy the genuine parts due to the contract between Honda and supplier.

Is the G8D-456H-A the 3 button remote? or the 4 button (panic button)?

95% of the relatively few failures in these things are due to pressing the switch harder and harder as the battery starts to wear out (which of course makes no difference whatsoever, but does wreck the switch). It's possible to dismantle the remote, desolder and peel back one of the lesser used switch contacts and then swap good for bad.

Once the battery has been out, you may have to reprogram (it's a little weird, some do, some don't).

A neat little trick used many a time to determine customer blame/abuse in warranty cases ;)

If it works, you'll be able to look out for a new remote at your leisure. If it doesn't work then your just back where you started......

    It's a two-button remote, like this: bit [dot] ly/QK5kPZ

Thanks for the tip. I have already sent my fob in to Option 4 in Preston, who have determined that it is beyond repair and I trust them on that. Before I sent it in, I took the circuit board out and inspected it and the buttons seemed to be working fine mechanically.

Yeah, I wouldn't do a temporary bodge for a customer either, not worth the comeback.
The button failure thing can only be determined my removing the switch pad and manually short circuiting the contacts, but you'd have needed a new remote in the not too distant future anyway..... at least you don't have to pay for programming :)

Doh! I took another look at the circuit board and it's actually G8D-452H - and there are a couple of those on eBay.

Sorry to butt in (but I will anyway), if someone could confirm if the programing procedure is the same for a 56 plate civic that would be wonderful - trying to get a spare key at a reasonable price...

  • This tallies with what I (reading between the lines) was told by my Honda dealer this morning. Cheeky blighters are charging £45 PLUS vat for the key fob and £25 PLUS vat for 'coding it to the vehicle'. That's nearly £100 I really don't have! Does anyone know whether I can get any model of key fob that will match my Honda HR-V? I don't mind what it looks like but I need one asap as I can't drive my car at the moment!
... and whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should ...
