Hello MSE'ers - Been reading this area for a bit over the past few days as I am curious - and still slightly unsure if I have a case to claim PPI, I'll keep it short as I know everyone is busy!
I have had 3 loans, all of which had PPI - Each one I had I was told that I'd need PPI because of various reasons, but mainly because of what I was borrowing for, and the fact they couldn't do anything with that if I lost my job and they needed to get any recompence.
HSBC 1995
A&L 2002
Egg 2005
I do not have any paperwork for any of these as I have shredded them and they are all paid off in full, So based on the lenders and dates above is it worth starting the ball rolling? I realise that I'd have to write a SAR letter and that would cost £10 per lender, but would I be wasting my time on these?
Or is the best first port of call a telephone call to each lender before going SAR route?
Thanks in advance...

    Hello there

The list is endless on the mis-selling of PPI, so I would also check Martin's page/guidelines as well, to see if anything in the list apply to you.

You can try at first by contacting the banks/business who may be able to confirm, and easier if you still have the account number.
However, you can track the loan account number on banking statements or online banking if you bank with the same ones now and where you paid the monthly loan repayments.
Or call into the branch and ask, maybe they will be able to confirm to you directly.

The SAR route is optional, they should hold data going back the last 6 years, so even if any of the accounts were still active then, you may be lucky to receive the details you require.

Some banks will hold data for even longer, on microfiche, so worth contacting them, or calling into the local branch and ask if they will be kind enough to check the info out for you.

Good luck and below is further details of Martin's PPI guidelines etc. ;)

I would assume that they will no longer hold any details of your accounts as banks only have to keep records for 6 years, but you should call first before giving up hope. If you do not feel they are telling you the truth then request a SAR but honestly I think this is a long shot.

Just a quick update to my query above, I have taken a while to get going... :o

But in the last couple of weeks I have managed to file a PPI claim with HSBC and A&L, waiting to find out what they say now in the 8-week window. Fingers crossed for those!

But I am struggling with Egg, I don't have any paperwork anymore and can't seem to be able to just call and discus like I did with the other two. Any advise on this, or do I need to do a SAR for Egg?

A quick check on this one…

I know on the above first two institutions I mention that I was definitely mis-sold PPI based on what I was asked and told at the application process as it was face to face. However with the third, Egg, I applied on-line and cannot remember anything on there about PPI – but know that I had it. I don’t have any account info and the loan was only active for a year before I re-paid it in full.

Would I be wasting my time going through the SAR process and filing a complaint (my grounds to complain is not knowing I had the PPI until it was there and in place), I know that there would have been some acceptance of T&C’s before going ahead which I must have done, would that just get thrown back as acceptance of PPI? (Again I do not have the T&C’s anymore!)…

    Thanks...

Hello, I've actually received some communication back from institution 1 on my PPI claim, I have several letters that my complaint forms part of a consolidated loan chain and that there are 5 or 6 account numbers in question. I only ever rememeber having one loan with these guys, so what could this be? Could it be linked to a credit card I had with the same bank at the time? I have no way of checking!

Probably a list of consolidation loans that you've forgotten you had.

Spot on, I racked my brains last night and have remebered two other loans I had completely forgotten about. I complained to the bank as I was mis-sold on my original loan, however I am not so sure on the other two as I can't fully recall the conversations etc (there are two more they mention I really don't know about, but could be c/cards perhaps).

They are investigating all loans now, quite surprised they raised all of them when I only complained about one. Fingers crossed.

Ok a positive update - 2 successes so far, have recived by BACS last week just shy of £4200 from HSBC and have yesterday received a letter from A&L offering me just over £4800, just Egg to go now but I suspect that will be tricky... This is all thanks to the helpfulness of the posts and users on this forums, so thank you :)

Final update from me, success from Egg as well - Canada Sq responded and upheld my complaint, a cheque is en route for £2800.

All credit to this forum and help and info from others, I wouldn't have even bothered trying to re-claim this money if the people and info wasn't here...:money:
