I've just discovered I have an aunty in Abedare. I haven't seen her since i was 5, and to be honest i don't remember her. We have talked on the phone, emailed etc for months. I would dearly love to visit her for a weekend and meet the rest of her family. I want to make it a surprise. As she is getting on in years, her visiting us is not an option. Can someone please recomend somewhere cheap to stay. We don't need meals included, just a cheap base. There are five of us in total. Renting a caravan for the weekend would be ideal, but i don't have any idea of local sites etc. Please help.:D

Not a great choice in Aberdare to be honest. Best bet would be to look on the local councils website for hotels (Aberdare is in the Cynon area of the council)

    Hope that helps

30 miles away and then you are into Cardiff, you may get a deal then with Travellodge or something similar.

My recomendation then would be look at the Big Sleep, in Cardiff City Centre but a room is normally about £40 a night

If you're arriving by car I think I'd be tempted to look at caravan sites around the Brecon area. Brynich or Pencelli are good sites but I don't know if they've got static caravans. It's a lovely area but you do need a car to get around. There's also a youth hostel just south of Brecon on the A470. I'm told it's a great place but I've never visited myself.

If you're coming by train or bus then you're better off staying somewhere on the Valley Lines train network. Cardiff would be OK, is an interesting place, and has easy links to Aberdare by train. There's a youth hostel in Wedal Road, which is very near to the fabulous Roath Park. (I often cycle past it at breakfast time and feel like popping in for the bacon and eggs. It smells delicious!) From here it's a short bus ride to the city centre, and then it's a half hour train ride to Aberdare.

Or you could probably find a decent cheap hostel or caravan site close to Aberdare itself. It's not the best place to come for a holiday but as your main objective is to visit your auntie it'll be fine.

Hello - I live about eight miles from Aberdare and know the area reasonably well.
The Youth Hostel south of Brecon has closed down so the YHA tell me, but if you aren't looking for Cardiff prices and want to be fairly near Aberdare then there is a really nice B&B in a little village called Trehafod. It's called Ty Gwyn and I pass it every day. It's near the Rhondda Heritage park that's a mining museum and art gallery. I don't have the number of the B&B but BT will. If you stay here then it's about eight miles to Aberdare - via Maerdy and over the mountain to Aberdare - and being in the heart of the Rhondda you get to drive through really wonderful scenery. I hope that helps.....

We are going to an event in Aberdare and are staying at Dare Valley Country Park, Aberdare .There is a caravan park there but think it is for tourers. There is also a 15 room hotel and we are paying £45 a night for 2 of us BB.

Its about 16 miles from Trehafod to Aberdare and with the ongoing road works in Porth it would be a nightmare. Would not recommend making Trehafod a base.
