Tips on contents insurance for holiday

Hello folks,

I've just booked a holiday and bought Thomson's standard insurance. On second thoughts, I needed to check with them on exactly how much they cover personal contents for. They'll cover up to £1,500, but only at £300 per item.

I need to take quite an expensive laptop away with me (£2,500) so understandably I'm a bit nervous about this.

I don't mind staying with Thomson's cover if necessary, but are there any tips for getting this type of value item covered by a third party, perhaps?

Any help appreciated.

When you buy household contents insurance lots of them have an all risks section on which you can cover items taken out of the house.

Depending on the insurer this section can cover person items in the UK, in Europe or worldwide. (Read the small print.)

It's a good idea to insure portable devices like laptops through this section if you regularly take them out of the house, as well as things like your handbag.

You are expected to name valuables that are over a certain amount and some of them have limits on how much each individual item can cost.

Yes it does make your home contents insurance premium more expensive but it means you don't have to worry about your travel insurance covering them.

In your case you are better of looking for a separate policy to cover your laptop i.e. a gadget policy that covers the region of the destination you are going to.

If your laptop is used mainly for business then you can get business policies where you can add on all risks cover to insure business equipment that you take out of the house again covering UK, Europe or worldwide.

Personally the only reason I would need to take an expensive laptop with me is for business reasons otherwise I take a cheaper netbook and accessories. If someone is wants to steal it then I wouldn't claim.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Many thanks for your advice, folks.

I'll contact my home insurance provider and see what they can come up with.

    Appreciated.
