Worth extra £30 for paying by Credit Card

Hi guys,

Just wondering if people think its worth paying the extra £30 (2.5%) of the holiday cost by using a credit card as opposed to a debit card in order to get the extra section 75 protection?

Thanks.

Remember that if you pay part by credit card and the rest by debit card you still get section 75 protection. Do remember that this is no substitute for cancellation insurance.
  • IMO, it all depends on how the £1200 is made up.

If it is just for flights and they are booked with a major airline (such as BA) that is ATOL registered then I probably wouldn't bother.

However, if the cost is for accomodation or flights with a charter or small airline, then I would certainly think that paying the extra £30 would be worthwhile.

Is there any way that you could use your credit card to just pay for the deposit and then use a debit card to pay the balance? as doing this would save you money and still give full S75 protection.

Pay £1 by credit card, the rest by any other means and you'll still have FULL protection under S75 of the CCA and you'll save yourself £30 !!

S75 will not apply if there's third party involvement which there often is with travel agents etc.

It does depend what you are booking. If its a package holiday with an ATOL tour operator then it is not strictly necessary as ATOL cover you.

If its a flight only with a dodgy operator, then it's absolutely worth it.

The point of your advice is good, however BA, and all other large scheduled and low cost airlines are not ATOL protected for flight only bookings.

£30 seems a lot, we have just booked our holiday to Miami all with BA (Flights / hotel / car) and it was £9 card charge for just over £2k of holiday. Normally I would not pay this but it was a limited time offer and it takes 3 days to get our savings into our bank so had no option

But is it ATOL-protected? (n.b. this is not the same as the operator holding at ATOL, it is possible for a company to hold an ATOL and yet sell stuff that is not covered by it).

If it's ATOL-protected then £30 seems excessive just to get S.75 protection since it's covered by ATOL. If it's not ATOL protected then yes, pay with the CC.

If you do use a credit card, make sure you use one that gives you something back. I.e airmiles for your next holiday, cash back etc. Then at least your £30 will be gaining you something too.

Who are you booking with? I'm sure that the rules had changed and that "Flight & Hotel" bookings made on the same site now had to be ATOL protected?
