DS had a late payment on the last payment of his years car insurance, he rang up & paid it, said he wanted to have his proof of no claims bonus sent as he was renewing with a different insurer .instead they auto renewed & tried to take money out of his account, he hadn't got enough money in so thet sent him a letter charging him a £20 fee for not having enough money in his account, he rang them back & told them so they cancelled it & said that they would only charge him for the days of the month that they had covered... he was relieved to get it cancelled but i said to ring them back & question that...

not sure if they can actually do that, anyone had a simular problem?

Many Thanks in advance, just wanted to find out if i said the right thing

It sounds like he didn't formally tell them he wanted to lapse his policy (or that is what they will say).

He should tell them about giving instructions to lapse at the end of the policy, and ask them for a transcript of the phone call. Then take it from their response.

    Did he cancel it properly?

Ideally in future. Phone to cancel and back that up in writing. 3 to 4 weeks before the policy is due.

Did he leave it too late? And the system had automatically renewed it already?

Its a PITA when you dont expect it. But its better than forgetting and having no insurance.
