I'm currently short listing for a position in my dept at work. We didn't advertise anywhere except the website and had over 50 applications in 2 weeks. The quality of applicants was variable but many were exceptional. In this kind of climate you don't need much reason to discount someone. Even a minor spelling/ typo error can signal lack of attention to detail so why bother interviewing that candidate when you can pick the ones who didn't make that mistake.

I was told that I never fully explained my knowledge on one of their essential requirements, which is fair enough but frankly, after writing what I had, it should have been blindingly obvious that I understood it perfectly well.

The other thing was that there were a few spelling and grammatical mistakes in my form.

Essential requirements - even if you put in a completely different place that you covered all these, you absolutely have to put it in that section as well otherwise the box ticker cannot tick the box.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

That's absolutely fair enough but as I said there wasn't a single error on my form, that's what got me so angry.

You didn't use any US spellings did you? Probably not though.

This is interesting. I probably find myself using about half and half US/UK spellings - I'm both myself, so whenever I asked my parents how to spell something I got different answers! Both look correct to me, so I wouldn't notice. But would employers really be overly fussy about that?

Well I hate it when people write license or program instead of licence or programme so I wouldn't be surprised if it winds up some employers.
  • Hi, I totally understand. I turned up for my interview on Thursday to be told 'Oh we assumed you wern't coming as you didn't reply' I had e-mailed and telephoned!!
They went on to say 'well we'd better do it then as you're here' needless to say I made a right pig's ear of it but I don't think that was my fault either.
I know there are few jobs and many applicants but this was a job that in which you had to value people but obviously not staff!!!
