58 Plate Vauxhall needs a new gearbox !!

Hello,

I wondered if anyone would be able to give any advice or had the same problem. Our car is a Vauxhall Astra SRI cdti 150 xp and in Feb was in Vauxhall for the alternator to be replaced, at the time it was 3 mths out of the warranty so we complained to Vauxhall about the fault and they gave us back £700 as a goodwill jesture, all far an well at the time until now ...

We have been hearing a humming noise from the front of the car for a while so take to an independent garage and they thought it needed new bearings in the gearbox. Due to the previous problem I suggested to my husband we get Vauxhall to look at it to check they say the same and if there cost was similar, so far we had been quoted £1500, but may increase as may need a new clutch as well

Well Vauxhall have confirmed it needs a new gearbox and quoted £2500 , so after I pick myself up from the floor, my husband gets very annoyed and we have lodged a formal complaint as the car is not 4 yrs old yet and done 54k miles so this should not really be happening.

I just wondered if anyone new of anything else we could do it Vauxhall tell us to jod on, or if anyone else has had similar problems with Vauxhall.

Thanks for any help or advice anyone can offer.

  • its advisable to always replace the clutch when disturbing the gearbox plus, it a peice of mind its been done whilst it is off rather than paying abour twice!! how gutted would you feel that they put it all back together, and 100 miles down the line the clutch decides its had enough and wont pull the car 2 feet under its own steam.

full service history? low mileage, i wouldnt be expecting much from VX, may get a goodwill jesture of sorts.

Engine and transmission problems on these FIAT systems are depressingly common. Bargepoles spring to mind.

That's why I stick to Korean cars - 5 year warranty (Hyundai) 7 year warranty (Kia). When will European manufacturers catch up?

Only if you buy it new of course -- so those deals which actually make Vauxhalls competitive are out.

Else you're left having to spend £18000 on an Astra. No thanks.

Find one that has been written off and get the box from that at a fraction of the cost.

As has been said get a new clutch whilst you are at it.

Caveat:- Put pressure on Vauxhall first to offer a good chunk of goodwill say 50%. They are only likely to offer this if you have a full "dealer" service history.

I dont know why they say you need a new box you can put bearings in these boxes without having to take the box out not a DIY job by any means but it can be done As long as it doesnt jump out of gear and no selection problems id change the oil and hope, that is of course if its got any oil in it !!!

The gearbox (M32) on these is a known weak point. The gearbox is rated to 320nm of torque, this is the same as the CDTI 150 engine produces at its peak and there is just no tolerance.

Loads of reports on http://www.astraownersnetwork.co.uk/ in the forums. Your repair price is on the high side though from what others have advised their cost was.
