Car insurance direct debits still being taken after cancellation

I discovered today that I have been paying car insurance in error since January. I sold my car in January and called my insurer to cancel the policy. They went through the cancellation fees etc and also told me to put my request in writing which I did. I received a letter shortly after and from memory it told me about how if I carried on paying my car insurance I could keep my no claims bonus. I remember laughing about it and then must have put it in the bin. I called my bank (Halifax) today to stop the direct debit, they told me that it is easier to claim a refund if I do the cancellation through the insurance company. I called them and now they want proof that I sold the car. They told me to get a letter from the DVLA which confirmed the registered user had changed. I called the DVLA and they want to charge me £5 for this letter which will take 4 weeks to process. Am I missing something? I told my car insurance company I wanted to cancel, I also wrote to them asking to cancel and they agree that they received that letter. Is there any reason why they can't refund me the money they have been taking right away?

As you say, you put it in writing to them and they acknowledged it. What is their explanation for having not actually followed your instructions and not cancelled it?

The selling the car bit is fairly irrelevant in this case

Can't think of any. If they acknowledge they received your instructions ask them why they didn't act on it - and you want it sorted now.
