Free (or v. cheap!) accounts package needed for analysis

I have (naturally) searched and skimmed the most recent requests for free accounts software, but I can't be sure they do what I want.
I've used QuickBooks at work, and I'm after a limited amount of the same functionality for a small club for which I'm treasurer.
What I want to be able to do is analyse both what I've spent money on, and what I've spent money for, which I think QB would call Accounts and Classes.
So, I bulk buy stamps in April, but I want to 'allocate' some of them to the Outing, and some to the Weekend, and some to the Christmas lunch.
Is there anything out there which will let me do this, quickly cheaply and easily?
TIA.

Good news is that DH says he's used GnuCash a bit, so I'm hoping he can give me a hand. I've put a few entries in and reconciled a bank statement, but haven't tried to 'categorise' the expenditure yet!Signature removed for peace of mind0

I have used Kashflow for the last 3 years, and find the online system great. But it does come with a £19 per month bill, but it does all my VAT, and purchases and sales.0

Been using DIY Accounts for years.
Spreadsheet based and sooooo easy to use. Even produces your year end reports.
Gets a huge Thumbs up from me (btw no I don't work for them lol)0 -
I absolutely cannot justify paying anything for this: it's a small special interest group, and if there was nothing out there I'd carry on messing around with Excel! Especially as I don't need VAT, purchases or sales: it's membership income annually, plus various events which have money going in and out.Neildigital wrote: »I have used Kashflow for the last 3 years, and find the online system great. It's just that I'd like to know how much each 'event' cost including postage etc, but I also want to know what we've spent on postage over the year.
Can you point me to a website for that one, in case I don't get on with Gnu?Been using DIY Accounts for years.

Think it's run by Terry Cartwright. The support is excellent too.
If you are spreadsheet savvy think this is the way to go for sure. Even if you are not keen on spreadsheets it's a very very easy package for every event. The included manual is in simple English. Support is available on the forum or by email.0
