size of loaf is 800g - bread flour is 60P for 1.5kg and yeast is 68p for 6 packets
You don't need to buy sachets. You can buy a tin of Allison's Easy Bake yeast for 99p from Tesco or Asda.Doves Farm also do a large foil packet for about 20p more.I make bread at least once a day and a tin lasts me a couple of months. For anyone interested, there's a massive Panasonic thread on the Old Style board here

I've wanted one of these for ages and managed to find one at a John Lewis store. I found out about it from Reevoo.com and wondered if the rest of you were aware that you can get them to email you a price alert if and when the price of something goes down?

Basically you choose the product you're interested in and click on 'Email me price alerts'. You are then asked to sign up.

This is the second time I've managed to get something I'm interested in at a price I'm willing to pay. Of course the product has to be already reviewed on the website but there's oodles of products on it.

Much cheaper than buying a decent loaf, but it doesn't last long as it's so nice - just taken one out of my breadmaker now, after doing a 2 hour loaf and half the loaf has gone already! My boys don't even complain about the crusts on home made bread!

How much cheaper is it to make your own bread? Can anyone give me a rough estimate of the size of each loaf, and how much each loaf costs?

I usually make my bread 70% wholemeal and 30% white so that's more expensive than if you were to just make a white one. I'd say it was about three quarters the size of a shop bought loaf, the last time i worked out the cost was about 18mths ago and i reckon then it was about 48p.
So you could probably say about 30p for a white loaf. And much tastier than a shop one.

The simplest bread recipe I use in my breadmaker is:

    500g Strong flour (1/3 bag T*sco flour @60p)..... 20p
    1 sachet of yeast (8 for 64p)............................. 8p
    Dash of salt.....................................................1p(?)
Water (not on a meter so free for me).................0p
    Electricity used................................................10p
    Total Cost......................................................39p

Obviously, you can make more complex bread with more ingredients, but this lasts a day and yields 8-10 slices of yummy bread. "Every Day value" bread costs 47p, gives more slices and lasts longer. But I know which I'd rather eat!

Come on people, it's not difficult: lose means to be unable to find, loose means not being fixed in place. So if you have a hole in your pocket you might lose your loose change.

Also just bought one! Thanks OP and others for their reviews and info. The last time I made bread was at school and it tasted awful! Well, here goes 50 years later.

I did have an e-mail alert registered, but not been sent it yet. best to keep an eye on MSE, it seems!

    Thanks everyone.
