Have got a traffic citation whilst on holiday in Florida!

Hi All,

Is there anyone out there who has been issued with a traffic violation whilst on holiday in Florida? And only been made aware of the fact via unauthorised CC payments made by the US car rental agency? If so, could you PM me as to your experience? Many thanks.

Are you sure they are unauthorised? It might well have been in the rules when you signed up. Any resultant parking charges etc will be charged back to you.

Same things happen here especially with the PPC scammers. Rental cars must be a joy to them.

Heres your problem. You won't have previously heard about the violation as the car owner would be registered as the rental company and therefore the charge would be sent there. They'll almost certainly have a clause in the paperwork you signed to state that they can use the stored credit card details to recover any money they need to from your hire. Thats the reason they take the details in the first place, regardless of how you pay for the hire.

They probably should have told you first and you should ask for a copy of the violation but I don't think you've got a leg to stand on here.

Don't try to avoid them or next thing you know they'll be applying to extradite you, with exraordinary rendition as their second option!
  • The rental agreement you signed when you picked up the car will have stated that any parking/violation tickets will be debited to your CC account. That's why rental companies always want credit cards.

This has been the rule for the last 30 years that I know of.

It happens the other way round too. My son, who lives in the US, was done for speeding on the A303 and his fine (+£25 admin fee!) was deducted from his credit card. No points, though, since he has a California licence.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.
