Working tax credits overpaid

Ive just recieved a letter from HMRC saying we owe £2159
This is overpayment from the period ending 05/04/2004
They also want payment within 12 months .
That's 8 years ago!!!
I haven't got a clue what they're on about with this amount. We've phoned the tax office and theyre going to send some sort of form out.
Can we be made to pay this as its so long ago?
And if so, we can't afford this so how little will they accept?

You need to aske them how the overpayment occurred, if you don't agree that they have updated your account correctly, get them to send you a dispute form. If you find that its correct, they will give you time to pay.
  • How can it take 8 years to realize someone has been overpaid. Jeeeeezzzz. They are a joke aren't they?

Also, we haven't recieved any money since probably 2004.
Each year we get a letter saying weve been overpaid and we get £0 any any monies due go to paying off what we apparently owe.
God knows where they got theses figures from, I've not got any records cause we've not claimed for 8 years or so.
What should I do cause I certainly can't afford to pay that ?
And that's doubtful if I even owe that!

He can't appeal, he is outside of the time limit.

There might be a dispute, but if the OP knew there was an overpayment and knew it was being paid back then he must have accepted it was right otherwise presumably he would have challenged it when he was first told about it.
