Switching from Economy 9

Hi everyone.
First post so I hope I'm not going over old ground with this...
I'm on an Economy 9 electricity rate provided by London Energy. I think this rate is pretty rare and I'm not entirely sure of what the benefits are.

There's no gas supply in my house so heating is by storage heaters and the water is heated up by immersion.

As a dedicated money saver I'd like to switch to a cheaper supplier but have so far been thwarted in my attempts. A number of suppliers that I've do not seem to support the Economy 9 rate. Some suppliers have indicated that I can only switch if I change the meter to Economy 7 (or similar) but this will be at my own cost (now you know I don't want to do that if at all possible ;) )

I've got a couple of questions, so if anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.

1. Is there anyone out there who has successfully changed supplier while on an Economy 9 rate? If so, which supplier and are you saving money?

2. For the experts out there: do the benefits of Economy 9 outweigh standard Economy 7? My bill seems to have 4 sets of figures on it (2 night rates at 3.340p and 3.090p respectively, and 2 day rates at 7.880p and 7.480p respectively) plus a daily standing charge of 18.58p. And incidentally what is Economy 9 anyway?

Hope someone can help. Thanks in advance.

  • Hmm... this looks as tho it could be a bit of a tough one.

Anyway, I've managed to glean a bit of info about Economy 9 myself and I've realized that the figures above are excluding VAT.

So... the correct break down including VAT is:

The daily standing charge is 19.50p

Unit charge for each of the first 1500 units supplied in daytime, in each quarter other than for 'controlled heating' (I guess this is storage and immersion heaters but not sure) is 8.27p

Unit charge for each aditional unit supplied is 8.13p

Unit charge for each unit supplied at night or for 'controlled heating' is 3.50p

Right, I'm totally confused as to whether I'm getting a good deal now. If anyone can help with this, I'd be very grateful.

    Cheers.

Try powergen. We have storage heaters as we are all electric. Ask for the domestic heatwise tariff with economy 7.We get 10 hours of cheap electric just for the storage heaters & emertion tank it works out 3 hrs in afternoon, 2 hours in the evening & 5 hours at night.
    hope this may have helped
Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!
  • Thanks shaunt.

I'll look into that. Sounds like it could be a possibility.

    Cheers

    Hi
We are also with Powergen on the same system, although they refer to it as economy 10. What we can't get out of them is what times the economy rates are - as sometimes we need to switch on immersion heater during the day and it would be helpful if we knew what the additional hours were. Does it mean that if you boil the kettle during these so called economy hours, you don't get that at cheap rate?

We have tried ringing - but what a nightmare - and the person at the other end had absolutely no idea

We have tried writing - but no response.

So if you have any info we would be grateful!

    Thanks
