claiming on a 3rd party car insurance

Thank you very much Quentin, you've been most helpful.
I did report the incident to my insurer and now I'm dealing with the 3rd party insurer directly.
I did put in an estimate, perhaps too soon, but they said they would accept another one as well, so I'll try to get a cheaper one and put it in. I'm worried they might write off the car in the Cat C.
So, if I understand it right, if the car is written off, they will not provide a courtesy car?
And I need to cancel my insurance if they write the car off? - I paid for the whole year in advance. When is the best time to do it -before the write it off or after, or after I accept the payout?
Thanks0 -
If your car is no longer roadworthy, then the third party insurer should provide a hire car till yours is repaired or they have given you the payment.
But they won't pay for any more replacement cars after that (if you decide to repair the write off, then you will have to arrange your own replacement whilst repairs are done)
Unless you want to, there will be no need to cancel your insurance, make sure any replacement car you get is acceptable to your insurer then your policy can continue (there may be a premium adjustment for the replacement car).
But if you do want to cancel your policy, then do so from the day you no longer want to have your car on the road. (If you cancel you won't get any NCD for the part year you have been under cover)0
