Yes. You are required to stay with that Gym for the contracted term.

They can certainly try. I've read some things on here where people have cancelled their DD and ignored people long enough that they give up chasing, but sounds like a lot of hassle to me...You were obviously happy enough with the contract when you took it out, so why not stick with it until the end of the term, then switch to the other gym?

You are required to pay the full amount that you signed up for.

Cancelling a direct debit is only going to make matters worse, it doesnt cancel your contract, all that does is tell the bank not to pay them, they will still come after you for the money.

You really would be best just keeping with the gym you signed up for for the duration then cancel it at the end of it. But be sure to read your terms and conditions about cancelling it.

What I would suggest is asking the gym to match the deal - if it looks like you may be a pain in the backside they may be convinced to do this as opposed to having to sue you for the contract etc...

Probably best to shop around before signing contracts :)

    This.

You found a deal and were happy to sign a contract on the terms proposed. You are obliged to fulfill your side of the contract.

Read the terms and conditions of your current contract. If needs be, go into the gym and speak to the membership person and ask for a very specific breakdown of what you need to do to cancel, and get it in writing (on head paper for preference).

Then follow the instrutctions to the letter.
