Hi there
I've just had a small utility room built (about 40 inches wide). the washing machine currently has the tumble dryer sat directly on top of it but its not stable enough.
my plan is to build a shelf by screwing 2x4 to the wall then some more 2x4 across the gap. finishing off with a piece of mdf as a base for the dryer.
Is thisa reasonable plan and what type of mdf would be strong enough?
Help would be much appreciated

MDF really doesn't like damp or wet so I wouldn't recommend using it anywhere humid... like a utility room. I'd use a length of cheap kitchen worktop, exterior grade plywood, or damp proof chipboard, in descending order of cost and appearance.
You could also construct the platform out of tongue & groove floorboards or similar.0 -
Thanks, that's really helpful.0

You're going to want something reasonably thick so it doesn't sag. Kitchen worktop is fine - you can get 3m lengths from B&Q for £40 and can probably get ofcuts from ebay or gumtree cheaper or perhaps free from freecycle.0

Forget MDF, others have said why, but at 40" wide you should find that in a skip, or a shops bin.
Ok, some local authorities don't like it, but I believe in recycling.
Go down to the local amenities site on a Saturday morning, I guarantee you will find someone dumping something suitable within 10 minutes.
:money::money:rememberI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
Cheers, I might give freecycle a go. it doesn't need to be pretty0

The weak point is the fixing to the wall. If there is room, fit batons as uprights standing on the floor to support the weight.0
