I would worry if the house burnt down or a theft.

They wouldn't but the claimant has to lie every time they fill in the forms because there are questions about any other money - cash, etc.

But surely benefits are there to literally prevent people from being on the streets/starving. If people have enough money that they can afford to "defer" benefit payments then I'm sorry but I don't think they should still be entitled to it!

I think the idea has merit. Some people are better money managers; are they to be penalised? Or maybe they're actually lucky not to have had anything go wrong - repairs/replacement of household items for example.

If deferred they can call upon it when needed. If they get it and spend it - because if they don't, someone will take it away - then it's not available when needed.

There are exceptions, as with most things, but generally the only reason bank balances would go above or below the various points at which different tariff incomes apply would be the payments of the benefits themselves (which count as income and not capital) and the subsequent withdrawals for spending the money on the things for which they are intended.

If one is saving benefits (means tested ones) at a rate that is causing this issue, then one is probably missing out on something that would not be considered a luxury (newspaper delivery, internet access, better home heating) or maybe some bills are being paid by saving up instead of on a budget plan. Like paying insurance annually instead of monthly.

Well there should at the very least be a limit. If the deferment reaches, say, £1k, benefits payments should stop.
