he is going for the interview ... fingers crossed he gets it because i do not want to have to say i told you so ...

Please try to be supportive, if your OH does miss out, already feels dejected and upset and you go 'oh I told you not to bother' this could be really damaging to his self-estimate. Quite frankly I think he has the right idea by thinking long term - ie my contract may end in a few months so I need to find something more permanent - whereas you seem to be stuck on the short term - ie it'll leave us short this week so it's not worth the hassle.

Glad you calmed down then! Sometimes you do have to speculate to accumulate, and I can't blame him for wanting to try.. better luck next time
  • you dont even have £50 in savings to cover short term emergency costs, you really need to start saving i cant imagine what sort of life you must live, especially with kids

i don't have kids ....annoying things

well i have some news he got a call yesterday to say that subject to checks etc he possibly has the job which is brilliant and im glad you lot talked me into letting him go.

as for saving its difficult when one partner loses job for health reasons and then loses his benefit so that your relying soley on one persons money but we lead a relatively good life despite this

Whether or not he gets this new job, the process of applying and going to interview is worthwhile. Your OH sees that the horizon is rocky and is doing the 'man' thing and planning on how to take care of your future. Getting back into the interview cycle of things and getting back used to jobseeking will help, as will energetically getting himself back 'out there' and looking!

I agree that it's hard to save when you don't have a lot of money - but I also agree that a £50 cushion shouldn't be so much of a problem. £50 isn't a lot of money at all, and is on the bottom of the range of "horrible and unexpected things that go wrong" expenditure.

It's great news he has got the job - but now you really do both need to sit down and work out how you can still have a relatively good life on a bit less money! You need something behind you for the times when the money won't stretch...
