am i being unreasonble

My oh came home tonight to tell me he has a job interview .. its a 4 hour round trip and its friday
thing is he is currently working on contract for a company and they just keep extended though he has heard from someome hwo has been told by someone who got it from someone that the company intends to get rid of all contracters between novemeber and april.
problem is we have no saving so whilst we know we are going to have to start saving now , i think he would be foolish to ask for a day off with only 1 days notice and if he cannot get it as holiday then we would lose 48 quid approx for him taking a day off.

i have said he is best of waiting to find out what the company are planning to do and save 50-75 a week where possible untill november when we could have approx 800 in the bank so that should he then get a new job we would have enough money to pay rent and get food in the month we would have to wait for his first pay packet from new job.
rather then rocking the boat and ending up with no job.

what would you do ?

If it were me I would go to the interview. Its a gamble of 48 quid but it could pay off.

but because im not getting an income due to dwp probs we cannot really afford to lose £48 plus the £20 quid to get there ,
then on top of that should he get job we would have no money stored to pay the rent buy food for at least 3 weeks as he currently gets weekly pay and then its monthly and we somehow have to find money for him to get to work

  • Is it a full-time, permanent job? Will he have to travel four hours a day to and from work? I'd go to the interview if it was full-time and permanent (or even long enough fixed term). I don't think I could cope with two hours each way travel, though.

it is full time perm , apparently the recruitment agency tells them there is a company car so travle will only be 30-40 mins a day rather then 2 hours on pub transport

however the job was originally paying 23 k now 20k and im not sure the agency know for sure whats on offer

    Ok - personal advice only.

My OH had been contracting for 2 years following redundancy. Got an interview in London (wouldn't do over phone etc).

Cost was £500 (travel and hotel) plus being away with possibly nothing to show.

I had the same anxiety and worries - but did it (admittedly against what I wanted).

End result - fantastic. He works away a few nights a week (2 on average) but home 5 nights and now takes children to school (never did before).

It's a gamble - but it can pay off.

Please try to be supportive despite your reservations. You OH really needs your support and some positivity - interviews aren't easy. Good luck to OH for tomorrow.

Then don't say it! No interview is guaranteed, but he is being extremely sensible in trying to secure employment before his current employer gives him the push. You say he's a contractor, so there will be no cussion of redundancy pay, and if he gets the push and can't get immediately back in to work, then that £800 you plan to save won't last two minutes.

How many other candidates is he competing against?

I agree with quote above... interviews can be mentally very tough and he might need someone cheering for him.

IF he doesn't get the job remind him that... he may have been fabulous at interview, he may have said all the right things, he may have had all the right attributes BUT someone also fitted the bill and just may have pipped him at the post.

I only say this because it is easy to feel dejected and rejected - he might need you to support him and reassure him about how he does have skills etc.

    Good luck :)
