Blue Screen of Death

My Niece's Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop is intermittently getting the BSOD running Windows XP Home. Have scanned for viruses and malware, all clear. Used CCleaner to remove surplus files and clean registry as well. Have also done a system restore going back over a month before the BSOD started appearing.
Details from blue screen:
Technical information: STOP 0x00000024
(0x001902FE, 0xA913C5FC, 0xA913c2F8, 0XF731EE16)
Ntfs.sys - Address F731EE16 base at F72FA000, Date Stamp 48025be5

I am wondering if this is a hardware error as the laptop is 6 years old but was thinking of rebuilding the machine to see if this cures it.
Any other ideas would be appreciated as Microsoft charge £46 for a support call and Dell charge a minimum of £19 so was hoping to fix it myself.

    run

    chkdsk c: /F

    on it

backup important data to an external drive - use macrium reflect free if you want to backup the whole system

factory restore it, using recovery partition, instructions are on the dell site, takes about 10-15 minutes.

BSD usually signifies a failing hard drive , back it up then replace.

Not correct. Although disk issues are common, a BSOD could be as a result of many types of hardware problem.

I suggest you download and run BlueScreenViewer (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html) and check the contents of the latest memory dump. It may provide something more useful such as naming the file (or app) that it crashed on.

You could also do an SFC /SCANNOW (have your XP disk to hand)

    Best of luck

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I eventually found that one of the 512mb ram chips was faulty and replaced it. This stopped the BSOD.
The hard drive is not in the best of health having a number of reallocated sectors so this will need to be replaced soon.

  • BSOD is often caused by software conflicts too.
I recently had it happen 4 or 5 times in about 2 days, I uninstalled an internet monitoring package that I had installed the previous day to the problem starting - since then, no problems.
