loft hatch..

Just getting my loft hatch done from a local chipee.....need any helpful advice on this...please add any points or tips that may be useful..thanks.

    if the roof is a truss rafter roof (most new houses) dont let him cut any joists! When i had carpenters in to quote most of them were prepared to cut mine and put extra wood in to strenghten - this was wrong! .......mine was truss rafter and structural engineer is apparently needed before any work done as all strength of roof lies in these..............normal roof rafters ok :)

    modern houses usually have 600mm width between joists. that should be enough for most hatches.
    thats why older house mostly had small hatches, they only have 400mm to play with.
    Get some gorm.

    guess what guys....mine is the old house.....built around the 1900s....i,e 400mm width.Now what???
    We do have hatch but v. small.....need it bigger for storage. Any suggestions please...
  • If your joiner is experienced...then he is the person to ask.
