Renault scenic-Car key broken!! Not fixable

Hi, I have a Renault scenic dci 2004 and the only card/key I have has broken.....it was fixed a couple of weeks ago but stopped working again and it's not fixable this time. The bridges or something inside is broken and not able to see the numbers!!! It will not even open the car and the battery has been changed. How/where can I get another card/key without paying a fortune?? I am without a Car at the moment and really need it ASAP! Thank you for reading.

there maybe a few locksmiths running the service of renault card programming but tend to be dearer than maindealer anyway as they order blank cards from france.

£180 should see you get a card ordered from renault and programmed but its not a sameday service, the card is ordered from renault france, then the cars card reader and ecu is wiped with renaults card programming system, then the card and ecu and reader are simutainiously programmed.

it can take a 14days for renault france to send the card to your maindealer network, then they call you to arrange a date for you to either bring in the car, or arrange a pick up (at your cost).

without the card working you cant unlock the steering lock (as that is part of the alarm key card system). so i would think carefully on how your going to get it to them.

to gain access to the car, got to the passenger door, under the end cap of the handle is a key hole, in your card you will have a key (battery cover) you can gain access to your car (but it does nothing elses) to retrieve items.
also forget ebay for used cards they are not programable, and not worth spending upto £20.00 for one, although if you have a damaged case, you could probably used it to replace your case (but would to cut it open and glue it back)

    best of luck

Big issue with modern cars. Bit late now but spread the word.

Never buy a modern car thats only got one key.

Make sure its got 2 keys or the master key etc. Find out what its supposed to have and make sure its got them.

Or deduct possibnly hundreds of £ for a spare key.

  • Thank you both for your replies. We have managed to get hold of a man who says he can fix it by buying an old one off eBay and transferring over?? .£30 charge!!! Will have to wait and see if it will work!!

Have you checked the club forums?

You could probably do it yourself for the cost of a fob off ebay.

  • you cant properly reprogram a second hand fob, check the renault forums, people have been conned into thinking buying a £10-£20 second hand card is going to be reprogramble they are not, the chip and transponder in the fob are assinged a code to a UCH ECU AND CARD READER it is only possible to reprogram a card that came with the car from factory. a new blank CARD or virgin card is needed for programing with renault software.

one way of getting round it is to replace the UCH, ECU,CARDREADER and card from a donor car. these kits can be found on ebay BUT YOU MUST CHECK YOUR CARS ECU SERIAL/MODEL NUMBER MATCHES THE DONORS!!!!
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Renault-megane-2005-1-4-16v-ecu-kit-/190674854559?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2c651b629f for example. how long will it last? how long is a peice of string?

you can break appart the FOB and solder the existing transponder ID chip to the second hand one, but this still must be reprogrammed to the car with renault software as the fobs frequency will be mismatched to the car ive seen people charge £150 to do this and many above board companies wont do it as they cannot guarentee it will work buyt will still charge for the effort in trying.

A good place to start is your local 2nd hand car dealers - non franchised.
Ask them where they go locally for keys and cards that need coding. Mine put me on to a local garage that made me a new key and did all the proper coding etc (even removing the missing key from teh ECU) for £60 instead of £180 from Vauxhall.
They may not be able to do a Renault card, but it is worth asking - Used car dealers HATE spending money, so normally know teh cheepest places around for this sort of thing.

car traders wont entertain in getting a second card done for a renault even at customers request even if it ment losing the potential sale, they know it has to go to main dealer for it to be done correctly the price can vary between main dealer quite differently, one near me give you one card and charges £180 the other gets you 2 cards but costs you £240 and another charges £300 for new cards new stereo code and any ECU updates needed and mini valets it aswell.

a renault independant specialist may also do the card programming etc but would costs as much as a dealer would.
