I was directed to this thread from another one. I'm surprised that so many people are quick to mock others for their financial decisions on a forum that was originally intended to be a community of like-minded people helping each other.
Saying that, I do feel that it's never a good option to go with an 'all in' or 'all out' gamble in this way with the stockmarket or other assets. The best approach is a steady accumulation over many years, with regular cash contributions invested in a balanced portfolio that help ride out the peaks and troughs.
The stockmarket is about much more than just short-term gains and falls, a lot can be said of investing with staid and steady companies whose shareprices rarely move, but who pay regular and decent dividends.0 -

Human nature is to gamble on the basis of limited information. Rather than digest as much as possible and understand the true fundamentals. Much stock market conversation relates to the indices not the companies that constitute them.0 -

Looks like Hamish might be right - again.0 -

When did he say this next 'massive' boom would be? 1 Year, 2, 5, 10 or possibly more?0 -

I couldn't agree more. Unless you have equal shares in all of companies in the FTSE100, its level should have no impact on a decision to buy or sell individual shares. It has a bit more relevence when buying into funds that are heavily invested into FTSE listed companies, but not much. With funds in particular, it takes so long to transact them that a market could have crashed and recovered in the time it takes to panic sell.0
