Higher excess = higher premium?

Just doing some quotes for my brother. Swinton charged a higher premium for a higher excess, something which I have never seen before.

Any thoughts or ideas from anyone?

    Nothing with insurance makes sense.

    keep trying.

  • Third party only is occasionally more expensive that fully comp because insurers believe, for certain kinds of customer, those choosing third party only are much worse drivers than those choosing fully comp.

Something similar could be going on here if Swinton believe those choosing higher excesses are dramatically worse drivers than those choosing lower excesses.

There is often an apparently paradoxical element to insurance:

People who look for TPO insurance tend to be worse insurance risks.
Keeping your car in a locked garage makes it more likely to be stolen, because the thief knows which house to raid to get the keys.
People who suffer non-fault incidents when they are miles away from the car tend be worse insurance risks.

I've never really noticed much difference between insurance premiums when I change the excess (rarely more than a few quid) - so I keep it as low as possible.
