We have just agreed the sale of our house, and the buyer has advised us they will be having a full survey. The house is in very good condition but I know that it will show that the electrics are old. The house was built late 60's and still has original fuse box. Will the survey request new fuse box and rewiring, and can anyone give me a rough idea on what sort of costs this would involve for a 3 bedroomed house.

Yes, it will mention your fuse box and probably your wiring too. A new fuse will be a couple of hundred pounds, a complete rewire would be (very) roughly £3-4000?Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

The house we sold (and the one we bought actually) had old fuse boxes. It was noted in the survey but our buyer decided that, for the price he was paying, he would cover it.
If you buy a new house you expect everything upto date. By an older property and, together with the character, some things are not as new as they could be. Every survey that I have had done on houses in recent years has highlighted that the electics probably will not meet modern standards and replacement should be considered. Given the number of changes in recent regs you can say this about virtually any house older than 2005! The important question is "is the installation safe?" In most cases, the answer is YES.
A survey will probably simply recommend that an electrical inspection is sought. This covers the surveyor if the house subsequently burns down! Your buyers can invest in this if they want. Mostly, even for 1960s houses, the system will only need updating as part of routine maintanence which does not warrant renegotiation of the agreed price (if you are buying a 1960s house, expect 1960s plumbing, wiring etc). However, if any inspection says the installation is dangerous, then obviously you will need to negotiate on your price.
Stick to your guns and don't let your buyers worry you over standard surveyor "get out" clauses. There is nothing dangerous about a properly installed old fuse wire box (although RCDs are definately more convenient and probably a little safer as they are more sensitive!)

£3-4k for a rewire seems a lot i wouldn't pay more than £2k......does depend on what needs doing though.0
