British "grabbing"gas!

Hi all.
Need some help. Recently received a letter from lcs regarding an unpaid bill from our previous property(we moved out last August!). We were paying electric by key and gas by DD. We have emailed lcs stating we disputing bill so they have passed it back to British gas. BG has sent us a copy of the bill. The copy of the bill states we owe £83.45 +vat for electric but nothing for gas. How can this be possible? Again, we were paying electric by key meter so shouldnt receive a bill for electric. BG have now sent a "still need to pay your final bill" which they've added £5 to "cover the cost of collection activity if you do not pay".

I really need your advice. Do I pay this even though I've already paid via key? If not, could someone give me some advice what to do next. Write letter/email containing what? So annoyed as we now use npower as previous owner used these but preferred BG but now regretting ever using them!

Thank you,

Chris

  • Hi Mr mez, the only help I can give you is to check your meter for any debt oweing. Screen " A" can show standing charge debt, indicated by a minus sign or the word "debt " against an ammount. Screen " S " , viewable only with key inserted shows any debt loaded onto the meter.

As you have moved out I would ask BG to check that they have all your payments from the time you were with them. If you had money on the meter from the supply changeover date so did not top up for a while this would put you in debt to BG. There could be wrong readings from your start or end date. the only way to check is to call BG.

Did you give your closing reading?

If not, if you paid close to the leaving date, they can see what you reading is close to.

They have to get your reading to balance to the energy purchased minus any remaining credit that they need to refund you.

The same applies to any debt, it has to be wiped and paid desperately.

Did you have any debt being recovered?

Did the final bill have a later date than when you left? If so, have you been over billed on standing charges that you are not responsible for?

The meter when we moved in was just under £10 but when we left we left just over £15 on it. Both in credit.

The thing I dont understand is that they are trying to charge us £89 on to of the key meter payment we made. We were only there for 6 months so only used about £100 of electric (both myself and fianc!e worked shift work so hardly in the house).
