Can you apply again for cards you've held before?

I have been an incorrigible "tart" for some years, trying to pay down my cards. Unfortunately, i now seem to have worked my way through all the ones on the "best" lists. First direct will consider applications after 6 months of a card being closed, but won't accept me, as my main banking isn't with them. Can I reapply to the big 'uns, like barclaycard, MBNA etc? I am afraid to risk a rejection on my score! Thanks

It would be nice if there was a way in finding out how much an application reduces someone's score but as scores are private only from lender to lender guess will never know.

Knock an application into B/C and MBNA.

The only lender that I'm aware of who had a 'once only' policy was Nationwide, but even they have relented and now make you wait 12 months.

The 'wait' period ranges from 30 days (eg Halifax) to 12 months, so you're free to apply for any card if they've been closed a year. However, the date they closed it may not be the date you called/wrote to them, so if any lenders are borderline 12 months you'd be best to check your credit reports which will show the actual closure/settled date.
