Fake DVD

Hey.

I don't use eBay often so please excuse all the questions!

My mum recently bought a DVD box set on ebay. It arrived in the post today and it looks fake. The pictures on the box aren't crisp and sharp and to me it just looks dodgy! I haven't tried playing the DVDs yet.
My mum doesn't want any hassle and was just going to keep the DVD's but it's really annoyed me. Probably half the DVD's we buy on Ebay end up being fakes :(. It's not even as if we think we are getting great bargins, this DVD was the same price as all the others being sold on ebay.

I have just checked the seller and they have a few negative and neutral feedback saying the DVD's are fake.

So what can I do? Is there any way of absolutely knowing if a DVD is fake? It is a box set of the latest Torchwood series from the BBC.

If I contacted the seller what would happen? Or should I report the seller? Is there a way for my mum to get her money back without incurring negative feedback?

Thanks

Judith

Your Mum can't get neg feedback from the seller, so don't worry about that.

You might find that the seller will simply refund if you say you're not happy. Worth sending a polite email to sound them out.

If they don't cooperate, open a SNAD case - you will have to return the DVDs to them by special delivery at your own cost.

I bought a 'Killing' box set last year, pretty convinced it's a very good fake, but the DVDs & features all played properly, so I just kept it.

I've pretty much stopped buying DVDs from eBay now other than second hand from obviously private sellers - I've been stung more than once with fakes and, as you say, the saving isn't enough to make it worth it. I thoroughly object to having to pay to return a fake - so its worth trying to kick up a bit of a fuss. You may find eBay tell you just to dispose of the item if you are lucky and refund you. I've also always reported the seller to FACT and their local trading standards whenever I've received a fake.

There seems little point in reporting sellers of fakes to eBay as they seem to do nothing about it unless the copyright owner does so.

Open a dispute with eBay if you get nowhere. They will place the burden of proof on the seller. If they lose the dispute, their account might be flagged as problematic.

  • Its not a Region 1 boxset is it? (United States, Canada, Bermuda, U.S. territories)

The reason I ask is that American boxsets can look a little 'fake' when we are used to high quality packaging on PAL DVD's.
  • OP if you may PM me a link to the exact item purchased I can tell you whether it's fake or not.

American box sets (from major studios) look fine, the counterfeit copies from China using the American pack design are the ones with the poorer looking packaging.
