How do you price your car boot items?

Do you put stickers on?
Or do you just make it up as you go along?
How do you decide what to charge? I've done it once before - some items were barely or not even used but in my experience people want stuff as cheap as chips.

You can put price stickers on if you like. It will give the buyers an idea of the price you are looking for, but be prepared to haggle.
With regards to charging, what were you thinking of selling?0 -
Stickers are good as they give a guide.
What to charge depends on the item. Some items do not lend themselves to car boots. I normally ask myself would I buy x from a car boot.
I would say that there is a percentage that want things for nothing but others that do appreciate the condition and price of things. It is good to know how much you want to prevent being railroaded into cheeky offers, some people are very persistent, even putting money in your hand.

I think a lot of people get disappointed with how little they get a a car boot sale. The old rule for anything secondhand was half price, but then that was for itemd collected from the person's house after advertising locally. Car boot sales are more causal, the buyer is buying off people who they know nothing about and are here today and gone tomorrow so there is more risk. Thus less than half price is the norm at car boot sales. In fact much much less than half price for many items.
Also buyers know that many of the items would be going to the dump anyway if they were not being brought along to the car boot sale, so that devalues items as well.
I would go to several car boot sales first before getting a stall. That way you will know the going prices of things.0 -
Not to mention look out for the thieving scum who will try to just lift your items and walk off with them. (Someone tried that on the last one we did, not knowing it was a fundraiser for our local martial arts club. They got a little surprise.) In general, it's good to have at least 2 or 3 people. They deem him their worst enemy who tells them the truth. -- Plato0

I lose something to the thieves every time I go.
As for prices , I have a fixed price in my mind below which I will definitely not go below- then end up accepting about a quarter of that lowest price before getting fed up and bringing the whole lot home.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Couldn't make that one up, really, could you? You could go one better and hire Jade Jones or Nicola Adams as bodyguards. Two slight, unassuming looking young women - who both have Olympic gold medals for kicking or punching people's heads in.
Well done. Biggest laugh I've had all day.

i usually put a price on the items as it gives people an idea of what I want, with things that are £1 or less, i won't budge on the price, but £5 + I usually put label £7, then come down to a fiver, they think there getting a bargain, I get what i wanted,
It depends on the area as well, as we've done car boots at posher school and some of the dearer items go.
xxx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0 -
I always put labels on the stuff we car boot after a slightly bad experience. I was being asked by loads of people for prices and a man asked how much something was and I said 50p I didnt realise that he had a brand new wool rug in his hand - he threw 50p on the table and walked off to sell my rug on his stall (I saw a different older man going home with it later).
I am flexible with my prices but have decided that on the next car boot I do if a buyer says 'will you take any less please' they get it for a cheaper price. If there is no 'please' the price stays as it is.
I did one a few weeks ago with my friend and she had some toys at 30p each a man asked if he could have them for 20p each and she said yes - he then went on to say three for 50p. My friend politely told him if he wanted three the price was 60p and she eventually got it.
Good luck.0 -

Hee hee, I'm a middle aged mumsy-looking type...but I have more than one national and international title under my beltDisclaimer: no thieves were actually harmed during the car boot, merely pursued and detained until the police arrived.
