Enagagement Ring Problems

My fianc! bought me an engagement ring in September 2011,but didn’t get round to popping the question until end of May this year. :o

Anyway, the ring he bought, from a well known jewellers, wasa 9ct white gold diamond solitaire ring, which cost £250. I have been wearing the ring since the end of May and I take ifoff when washing my hands, bathing etc.

The ring has become tarnished-looking already – theshoulders have stayed shiny but the bottom half of the ring looks really dulland marked.

The ring had to be made half a size bigger via the jewellers I bought it from when I first gotit but it wasn’t like that when I had it back.

Anyway, I’ve looked on the internet and seen that oftenpeople have to have the white gold jewellery re-dipped, but if my fianc! wouldhave known this, he wouldn’t have bought it in the first place. I don’t want to be messing around having it re-dipped and being withoutthe ring. Also, I would have expectedthe finish on the ring to last a lot longer than the not even two months I havebeen wearing it.

So, if was to take it back to the shop with the receipt andask to exchange it for a normal gold ring or a silver ring, would I be withinmy rights to do so? Would I be able torequest a refund if there was nothing I liked?

As I mentioned, the ring was bought in September last yearbut only presented to me in May 2012. My fiance wasn't told anything about the risk of the ring losing it's finish at the time of purchase.

Thank you.

  • This is the nature of white gold, it is actually a very soft material.

No rights given it is not faulty and almost a year since you bought it, unless you can prove that it is inherently faulty.

must say I'm a bit disappointed that £250 has been spent on something that no longer looks any good after wearing since
    28 May until today!

if they'd explained that this may happen, then we wouldn't have taken that chance.

Another long thread about white gold engagement rings losing their rhodium plating.

It will happen but shouldnt really happen that quickly. If you speak to the jeweler they may well replate it for you free of charge. Alternatively take it to another one and you can probably get it done for circa £25. The OP in the other thread found that the retailer of their wedding ring offered to fix the engagement ring free of charge even though they werent the retailer of it
  • Speak to the retailer and see what they say, they may re-dip it for free.

I use a silver cloth to polish mine when it looks dull and it always comes up really nice x

My engagement ring was around £800 and is 18ct white gold. About 4 months after I started wearing it, it started going a yellowy colour around the band. Unfortunately it's one of those things if you have a white gold ring. But the fact that my fiance made the effort to choose it for me (and the fact that I absolutely love it) far outweighs the fact that I might have to get it re-rhodium plated every now and then.
Just remember though if you decide to keep it, your wedding ring has to be made of the same ct white gold otherwise they will rub and wear each other away - so if you don't want to keep having them both re-plated then you should probably switch to gold or silver.

Gold itself is gold-coloured, so to make it not gold coloured on the outside, what you see is another metal in alloy with it (to make it paler), or coating it (to hide it). You may find the cost of plating it will vary with the thickness of the plating metal, so may be worth getting it done quite thickly (or rather in a lot of layers), or learning to love the fact that it will wear to your own finger and become individual! If it is worn and individual it may be a nicer present for your grandkids to remember you by one distant day, y'know?
  • I have to get mine done every couple of years usually and it costs about £25.

The only problem I have is I get my wedding ring done but not my engagement ring because when my DH got that, it came with a 10 yr after sales thing where they cleaned it and the diamond every yr for 10 yrs. after sending it off the first year, it came back and within 48 hrs of wearing it, my diamond had chipped! Now I don't know if it was coincidence but after having a bit of a fight, they replaced the ring with exactly the same spec new one and now I daren't let anyone touch it!

I'm not sure it should only last a few months before needing it doing, but I suspect that because it was purchased nearly a year ago, you'd have a job getting them to sort it. It won't hurt to ask the question though.

    Good luck!
