Cavity Wall Insulation through Powergen >> Rockwarm

in an effort to do our bit for the environment (and pocket) i've contacted our energy supplier / Powergen about having Cavity Wall Insulation. According to Powergen, our house (1970's 3 bed detached) will cost approx £230 to install

Phoned them Monday, then a company called Rockwarm phoned today to arrange a time for a surveyor to come round

Has anyone had Cavity Wall Insulation installed through Powergen/Rockwarm and are there any questions I should ask tomorrow when the surveyor arrives? Service seems very quick so far

any advice / comments always appreciated ;)

We've just had ours done, would have prefered to have used British Gas, as they had an attractive offer, for both loft & wall done together. I thought that if we needed to complain about anything/workmanship/warranty etc we'd have someone to complain to!

As we live in a groundfloor maisionette, it was left to the elderly lady in upstairs flat to decide, unfortunatly! She chose an unknown company, that advertised/leafleted the area, in attempt to save a (few) £$£$.

We agreed to pay 1/2 the cost of the wall job & she paid all the loft part.

They loft was done ages ago, by one sub contractor. The wall work delayed & date moved goodness knows how many times.

Eventually another contractor came to do the wall & wouldn't do it 'cos it should have been 2 jobs - although we'd agrred the work & layout of the flats with the surveyor, so he left without doing anything!

Today ANOTHER sub-contractor came, did the walls, NEARLY, before breaking their ONE drill bit, to make the holes in the wall!!

Guess it'll be finished by next winter!!

So best ask your people how many contractors & subbies, will be involved - & if they'll have a spare drill!!

  • they came round today. I was very pleased with their professional approach. Rockwarm and only Rockwarm will be involved with the installation. They don't use the bead-type of insulation, they use there own Rockwool product and it'll cost us £230. 3 week waiting list though

We got a leaflet through the door from our local council.

Our postcode area was being targetted for FREE loft and cavity wall insulation, as well as free door insulation, even though we are owner occupiers and our house has never been a council house (always privately owned since built).

The surveyor was booked and duly came round and said we could have an extra 200mm loft insulation to make a total of 275mm.

He then drilled inspection holes in the walls and told me that our cavity had some mortar breaches at the brick ties - this is a common problem - I should know, I'm a civil engineer.

As they use the mineral wall in the walls rather than polystyrene beads, they refused to install it due to the mortar breaches, as they would have warranty liability for any damp passage which resulted. We would have had to pay £300 for access scaffolding over our garage if they had done it anyway, as the council won't pay for that.

We also got free high quality draught proofing around all external doors.

I just need to find some way of getting free polystyrene bead wall insularion and we will be sorted :D

  • i had my cavity wall insulation done via the council and the loft insulated as well and they used a company called inta group. I didnt have to pay due to certain benefits I claim. they came out to do the assessment and the walls were done the following weekand the loft was done the week after. Both sets of workers were fast efficient and tidied up after themselves and didnt make much of a mess anyhow. So it is worth asking if you have a reduction in fee if you claim benefits or pensioner or even getting in contact with your local council.

    hope this helps
