Help please, this are driving me insane. Whenever I switch the wipers on the noise of the blades scraping on the glass is horrible. Is there some sort of easy glide thing I can apply to the windscreen or the blades themselves

I guess by the sound of things, you need new blades: www.wiperblades.co.uk

I gave up using cheap blades years ago for this very reason. I don't know but suspect the cheaper blades go hard and don't run across the glass so well.

Also grease and wax on the screen tends to grab the blades. For a long time now I've put a few drops of ordinary washing up liquid in the washer bottle, and I'm sure it helps after a while. Note however that some people reckon this is bad for paintwork so be warned, but I've never had any problem with this personally.

Try cleaning the glass with neat screenwash & newspaper.

    Or vinegar.

Also wipe the blades themselves, quite thoroughly, with kitchen towel/toilet paper, soaked in neat screenwash.

You'll be surprised just how black they were!!

Ditto that, I only used to buy the ones from pound shops but found they made visibility worse. Now I only use Bosch wiper blades, which last a long time and clear the water off the windscreen well.

Funny thing ... Bosch is what I use too. Don't know if they are the same Bosch as to the dishwashers, washing machines etc ... but we've got a dose of them as well. Maybe I should be getting shares in them?!

As hintza says, Bosch, Bosch or errrrr Bosch. If you are using cheap wipers its a false economy as Bosch last up to three times longer (Wait a minute, where have I heard that before...). Cheap wipers are dangerous and annoying. Our Scenic has had one set of Bosch on now for a year and they wipe as goos as the day they were put on, but we (I) do preventative maintenance in that I wipe the blades often using a soft cloth. Good luck!

    1. DON'T add soap (ferry liquid) to the washing bottle, liquid soap contains salts which WILL damage your paint job in the long run (with the help of long summer days). Car Shampoo is a safe bet as it’s simply not containing any salt.

    2. Make sure the noise do come from the blades themselves, many times the noise comes from the wipers motor assembly, if that is the case you will need to access this area (just under the edge of your screen) and spray it with some good silicon based oil like 3in1 silicon (I have seen the RAC man doing this to my GF's car and the squeaks has gone for 2 years).

    3. If you do choose to fit new blades, I like Bosch but even better I like TruPart which do the same job, stay as long and are slightly cheaper than Bosch.

I also recommend http://wiperblades.co.uk (cheaper than eBay!), but recommend Champion's new Aerovantage blades. My new pair were so quiet, I had to talk to the wife!

Two little gems that were passed to me and actually seem to work!

Wash car as normal (not with washing up liquid- each 500ml can contain as near as dammit about 600mg of common salt) with decent automotive cleaner but then wipe (rub!)windscreen with neat washer additive - you will be stunned how much more muck comes off!!

Spray VERY CAREFULLY, you mustn't get any on the screen you've just cleaned, some wd40 on each of the hinges and pivots on the wiper arm. As the wiper arm moves its geometry changes and its this flexing that keeps the blade in contact with the screen evenly. Any poor movement means a pressure point and possible judder.

Wiper blades are considered consumables by the trade, we shouldn't expect them to last for ever! Bosch seem to last longest though!!
