change of meter

So finally after months of waiting our gas is now on a credit meter, it was changed yesterday. I'm not expecting it to be all sorted yet but I thought I'd give EDF a call as they messed up big time with the electric.

It will be 3 weeks for the whole process to be sorted out, 3 weeks! Tried to give a meter reading but could only give what the engineer had written on the meter as nothing was showing when I pressed any button. Guy on phone said it should and to press any button, which I did as well as holding them down - still nothing. Just 'gas -on' and 'meter index 99999.99' etc. Told to give it a week and to see if it needs to be raised with another department but they will need the meter reading.

The meter is Landis + Gxr. Anyone know about these meters?

EDIT: do I no longer need to give readings?

Hi debrag, Landys and gyr are a very common meter, yours will prob be the latest one ( small white e6 meter ) Reading obtained by 2 presses of red button, which shows the words "meter index "then the read. Is there a small slot at the bottom of the meter ? ( thats the prepay meter ) and are you able to use your gas appliances ?. I have found the odd meter which has stopped in the past, but still able to pass gas. 99999,is the normal start reading for a new meter.

Meters should start on zero or above but sometimes you get them on 99999 which sometimes causes problems for agents hence its not too common. As long as it advances to zero and keeps going, you will be OK.

In terms of the admin, the supplier can be waiting 10 working days to receive the meter change details. Until then, you really don't want to submit your reads.

A very common root cause of a massive bill is someone entering a read off a new meter into a billing system with the old meter attached, it causes a "meter rollover". The supplier should stop this, even if you successfully enter it, but if not...you get a bill in error for thousands.
