0844 cheap lines rip off

maybe its just due to Olympics but I have not been able to get an access line for good couple of weeks now.

Cost has gone up from 0.50p per minute to 7p per minute, over 600% increase

Anyone else had problems? when do you think this will resolve?

I'm having to use 6p pm from my mobile to make international calls.

Anyone got a cheaper way of get these calls??

There is also a connection fee for 0844 calls from BT and other landlines, so even at 0.5p a minute it needs to be a fairly long call to make it worthwhile

You might find better options using a pre-select code like 18185 or other providers with freephone number access, or via ordinary landline numbers if you have inclusive minutes

Do a search in the MSE Callchecker, which has a link above here, or

Instead of messing about with 0844 numbers (using which, as redux points out, means you have to pay Talk Talk's connection charge even if your call fails), why not open a 18185 account online and use their 0808 1 707 703 freephone access number to make your calls to Turkey for 4p connection + 1½p/minute.

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

don't know am undecided, i have lebara mobile sim with NO connection fee and 6p per minute....

I checked out the 1815 site and it wanted 9pp min plus connection fee

so where you got this from I've no idea, unless you were referring to landline calls instead of mobile calls maybe

    Turkey for 4p connection + 1½p/minute.

I was - sorry, didn't realise you were calling a Turkish mobile.

I can find 7 or 8 eurocents or 11 US cents a minute for Turkey mobile

I think you'll have a job to undercut that 6 pence a minute you mentioned, so use that.

It may be a promotional offer - as the 0.5p rate would be, unless a mistake - so make the most of it.

There could be ways to make the call cheaper, but rather more involved, using two or three callthrough providers together, and I wouldn't count on it lasting as soon as one of them runs some checks
