Bathroom wall tiling - how easy to do?

We’ve got quite a small bathroom with about 3m2 tiling which I’d like to replace, because they look a bit naff.

Anyway, just been speaking with our handyman at work. He reckons tiling is a pretty easy job and that with half an ounce of skill and patience, I should be able to do it myself.

I’d not considered doing this, but it kind of appeals because it’ll save money.

Be interested to hear if other less-DIY-minded people like myself have managed this successfully? Or, indeed, if it’s not worth risking the bodge?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

Any so called 'handyman' will say its easy.
If its your first time you are bound to make mistakes and get messy plus you need to buy all the right tools mix the plaster and if your looking to sell might be better to get a professional in!
    Peace Out
  • Tiling certainly is easy to do.

Now the question you should be asking is 'is it easy to do well...' ;)

I tried tiling last year for the first time in my bathroom (most of 2 walls and a floor). Personally I didn't find it as hard as I expected.

It is a bit of a pain the first time having to buy all the right tools in, but that is true with almost all DIY jobs and it still works out cheaper than paying someone else! It's worth asking friends/ family/ neighbours if they have any tiling equipment, particularly a cutter as that is the most expensive thing. With wall tiles we found a manual cutter was best (but an electric one was better for the floor), but that could have just been our tiles.

We picked up a free DVD in topps tiles (we didn't buy anything there) that was useful to watch, plus there are lots of youtube videos and B&Q do some do-it-yourself classes that teach basic tiling- I think they might be free if you a B&Q club member (there's some info about it in this week's MSE email) but I didn't go to any of those so can't vouch for the quality.

Good luck! I have my kitchen floor to do in the next couple of weeks...

I tiled my back splash in the kitchen and although easy enough with mosaic tiles to get around sockets it was a b!tch cos some walls were as far from straight as you could get.
would imagine it to be much more difficult around the toilet cistern and sink, however I shall be doing that soon as I can get tiles and time.
    so heres hoping its easy:)

We tiled the utility half wall and floor, together with the hall floor. I cut the tiles - manual cutter for wall and electric cutter for floor, OH stuck them on and she did a pretty good job generally, there's 1 or 2 which perhaps have been pushed in just a little too far, bit our walls were well out or square and definitely not plumb. Saved a fortune even buying the kit. We will also do the kitchen floor and splash backs when we refit. Not sure about the bathroom as full height wall tiling will shoiw every imperfection but round here it may be better to do a job averagely well as to pay someone a lot of money to do a barely acceptable job. Too many 'handipeople' not tradespeople and its hard to spot / eliminate some of them. Topps tile DVD was also our tutorial.
  • Thanks for the replies, all! I'll speak to the husband and see how confident we both feel... :)
