Help for a newbie ebay seller please.

Hi there
I'm a newbie seller and have put a heavy item on ebay as collection only. It's about 9kg I think.
I've had a message to ask how much for postage. Can anyone recommend how I go about getting a quote from a courier for collection/delivery. Who do you use?
And if the postage charge is acceptable to the potential buyer, how do I add the extra cost when I've already listed it as a collection?
What's the best way to go around this. Anyone got any advice?
It's all very new to me. Please be gentle
Thanks for helping out if you can

If someone really wants something they'll find a way to collect. Last three items I sold were to people over 100 miles away, all three happily collected because they knew they'd be in my area on business. On the other hand I paid £25 postage for a bulky item from a vendor who insisted on insuring the item bumping the price up even more. With the benefit of hindsight this wasn't a good deal, but if I'd had to collect I probably wouldn't have bid. If it's desirable, people will collect, you can always relist with postage/courier charges once the desperation sets in.:)0

If people are asking for postage, then it's wise to explore it.
I listed a large box of postcards once, a number of years ago - I got no bids - it was collection only.
Listing with postage I started it to clear at £10 with £10 postage (took it down to the PO who helped me weigh it and gave me a quote) and got £100. It's very worth being flexible if you know you can post it. There are plenty of good couriers out there - try the thread about parcel delivery for some suggestions."Well, it's election year, Bill, we'd rather people didn't exercise common sense..." - Jed Bartlet, The West Wing, season 4

Thank you so much for your replies. I shall indeed have a read of the thread about parcel delivery - I should have had a mooch before.. doh!
And a good idea about relisting if fails to sell on collection. Hadn't thought of that.
Like I said - it's all very new to me and trying to learn as I go. You can guarantee I'll make mistakes but it's the best way to learn.New challenger £2014 in 2014

I have been on EBay for about 10 years and sell a lot of various items. I use ParcelToGo for heavy parcels. I sent a parcel for about 10 kg a month ago and it cost £12.60. They collect from your front door and are really good. I always use them for anything heavy. Dont hesitate to pm me for EBay advice if you want to.0 -
