Toshiba (on XP) won't start

So the home laptop seems to have developed a fault.
Press the on button, the F2/F12 screen comes up then it goes to a blank screen afterwards and stays there......no amount of on/off seems to get it past this.

What can I do?

Blank screen with a flashing cursor in the top left corner? Probably your HDD is FUBAR. Check in the BIOS to see if a) the HDD is being detected and b) that the HDD is the first boot device.
How do I add a signature?
  • no, there's no flashing cursor

yes it is, usually called Setup or similar, not many computer makers call it BIOS on that splash screen :)
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

OK, when I get in there where do I go from there?
  • OK, so the fault was a burnt motherboard

after a lot of playing around i managed to get it to display the following error.

pxe-e61: media test failure, check cable

How did you establish the fault with the motherboard?

The pxe-e61 error relates to the system attempting to boot from a network device. This usually only happens in one of two scenarios - either the PXE boot option is one of the first boot devices listed; or the boot device(s) above it in the boot sequence has failed. What items are listed in boot devices (in order please)

well it wasn't trying to boot from the network, researched google and they advised checking this.

so to it to the master who proclaimed the motherboard burnt

If the motherboard was kaput, it wouldn't show anything.

    I still think it's a duff HDD
