I recently bought a used car (June 2011 model) from Evans Halshaw and the salesman, although not pushy at all mentioned a 2 year service plan. Basically I would have to pay about £15 a month and would get the next two services free. I told him I would think about it.

Today, a salesman from the garage phoned ... pretending to ask how my car is doing, but really wanting me to agree to the service plan.

I hear that as well as the two services, there would be a reduction in the MOT when due, in just under 2 years. Also any puncture would be repaired as well as getting free seasonal checks of the vehicle (3 per year over the next 2 years)

It sounds OK, but I am always sceptical about these sort of things.

I did a quick Google search and there is an article here, although quite old.

I was wondering whether anybody has any recent dealings with this scheme.

Maybe I should just put money aside each month and get the two services at a garage of my choice, rather than at EH.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Avoid...run like the wind...xtra money in the salesman's pocket
  • Not Evens Halshaw but a Toyota dealer. Yaris Diesel, three year service plan £14/month, 2 x minor plus 1 x full service. Total £504, would have increased due to v.a.t. rise, plus £39 for brake fluid change at two years - if wanted.
    Three services with Toyota's (current) fixed price = £427 + optional £39 = £466.
So it pays to do a few sums first. Or just put £14/month into a savings account to pay when the time comes.

Thank you for all the replies

I'll opt out after all ... or at least not opt in
  • "Any puncture will be repaired" in particular seems like a dubious claim to make given that so many punctures can't be repaired.

Do they intend to repair punctures in the sidewall of the tyre for example?
