Ikea Worktops. Any good?

Hi,
I'm thinking of buying an Ikea kitchen but have heard mixed reviews about their worktops, especially on this forum. I'm slightly confused about the depth of their floor cupboards........would I be able to buy a worktop from another supplier ok or wouldn't they fit?
Any recommendations for suppliers greatly appreciated. The budget doesn't extend to granite by the way
Many thanks

One possible issue you may face with Ikea worktops is the width, iirc they are 606mm compared to the normal multiples of 50mm (500, 550, 600 etc), which means that a lot of cutting jigs for worktops simply will not work with them
As for quality, we've got some of their cheapest ones here, and they're about the same quality as the equivalent cheap B&Q/Homebase/Wickes ones from what I can tell (we've had them previously).
I don't know about the cupboard depths compared to other retailers worktops.0 -
I hired a jig from HSS hire when I did my (Ikea) kitchen, the jig was more than big enough to cope. My worktop looks as good as new three years later.
Their worktops are 62 cm deep, where as the standard elsewhere is 60cm, if you buy worktops from another supplier to go with Ikea units, they won't have a proper overhang above the doors. You'd need to get extra deep worktops and have them trimmed to size. Bonus of course is nice deep cupboards.0 -
Yes they are deeper and yes from an alternative mfr you will need a deeper WT tha the standard. In any event you have to scribe the WT to fit the wall so nine times out of ten you are going to lose some off the back anyway.
My jig works fine with an Ikea WT. Not the very best but you don't expect a rolls royce for a mini price. I'm not keen on their solid timber WTs though but once again YGWYPF.

We've got an Ikea kitchen with Ikea worktops and the worktops are fine. About two years old now. The only thing I don't like is the stainless steel sink, I definitely wouldn't buy another.0
