No, you can get it out by post and you can access the balance online.

That's a relief! :D So how do I view the balance online? Sorry if I'm being dim but really can't see how from their website.

Plus, when I want to get the money out how do I do it by post? Do I just write a letter asking them to send me a cheque?

    Thanks :)

Yep, that's how you do it ... applies to most BS savings accounts, sometimes there's a form but not in this case.

Please share the secret! I've got a regular savings account but no customer number. Tried accessing their on line system using my 10 digit account and it let me get so far but asks for a password. Could not see any way of registering for on line banking. Did you already have an on line account?

PS - I see the interest rate went up to 7.1% on 5/8! :-)

Well! I can't see how now!
Perhaps it's changed, I should give 'em a call. I do remember you have to apply and they send you the sign-on data by post.

See the link in the post above. They didn't send me anything by post, it worked instantly!

  • Btw, if you want to go to the link directly rather than following my link (which you should do really people :p ) here is how I did it...

    YBS home page
Your Society (along bottom of page)
Help (option bar on far left)
Online services (option bar on far left)
    Register now

    How un-obvious is that!?

Gone through the on-line registration process, waiting for a customer number which they should be posting to me.

BTW, my experience of opening this a/c. Tried to do it by post, as a joint a/c with my partner. My ID was verified without supplying anything, his wasn't and had to take proof of his ID into the London branch for verification. This never got through to the branch dealing with the postal application, who closed the account and returned my cheque! Went back into the London branch who were very apologetic. They opened a new account instantly and backdated the opening transaction to the date of my previous visit - so got interest on money they never had and I didn't lose out on my second instalment. A slip up well rectified, well done YBS. (Unfortunately, I didn't make anything on it, as I had the £500 sitting in my current account to cover the cheque.)

There's a MSE lesson for you! Get a current account that pays interest. ;-)
