Confused Scottish Hydro Debt

Hi all I recently contacted scottish hydro regarding a debt I found out about for £1400 to them. My ex husband had made payment arrangements with them(even though account was in my name) for the outstanding amount when we moved out in 2009. Originally they wanted £3000 for 6 month tenancy. I found out he went bankrupt and had not been paying it so they chased me. I queried the amount as being excessive and told them that the tenant after me also had problems with excessive bills (880 for 3 months).

I have now received reply saying they can confirm the account is closed and they have sent me statement of charges and final meter readings and can I confirm this with the letting agent.

Anybody any idea what this means, have sent them another email asking how this affects me and what letting agent needs to confirm this. But very confused at the moment.

If they want you to confirm it with the letting agent, it can't be anymore than the dates & readings.

Were the opening & closing readings correct?

Its difficult to say without more information.

With the passage of time since you moved, the lack of actual dates, relative meter readings and the size/type of dwelling, it's not possible to make helpful comment

However the £300 bill for 2 months use to the following tenants, gives a clue as to what may have happened
On the bill you have had, divide the Kwh charged by the stated Meter Units - which I suspect will give an answer of around 31.5 - If this is so it means that you are being charged on the basis of haveing an IMPERIAL meter which is marked ft3 on the front.

It's possible that meter is in fact a METRIC model marked m3, which only delivers roughly11.2 Kwh for each meter unit, and SH have mistakely billed on the basis of it being the IMPERIAL type.

Hopefully you can get access to your old dwelling to check the meters marking, if you can and the Meters marking does not match the billing method, you should immediately inform SH
Telling the present tenants that they may be being overcharged by 181% for their gas, should get their co-operation
